Bird Surprises

I have a pot of English ivy that I keep under my patio overhang. It used to be a combination planter but everything died in it but the ivy. There for a while dh and I noticed wrens flying in and out of the pot. I got to looking and it seemed that they were making a nest. But after awhile it didn't look like much so we assumed they went elsewhere. But these little birds are always outside the windows just a singing.

Well yesterday I went outside to water a few potted plants and thought I better water the ivy. I held the hose above the pot and as soon as the water hit the soil out popped these cuties. Is this not the cutest little thing you have ever seen? If you enlarge you can see the downy feathers sticking out. This one didn't look too happy to get his picture taken.

At first when they hopped out I thought what in the world? I had never seen any eggs or nest in this pot.

As soon as they hopped out, here comes mom and dad. Boy were they giving me a fit; bless their little hearts.

Well I went on about my business trying to water my other things and at the same time wondering what I should do. Mom/dad was having a fit their kids were out. So I decided I would capture them and put them back in the pot.

I caught the first one and put him in the pot and of course while looking for the others, he jumped right back out. Our charcoal grill sits right by the pot with a cover over it so I peeked under it and there the others were.

So, I decided to just leave them be especially since I thought mom/dad were going to have a heart attack.

When I went in they seemed to be doing alright. That is when I captured these pics.

Today, they are no where to be seen.

LOL, sounds like they flew the coop!!!! those guys will nest anywhere, I found some once in a tire rim that had a bowl on top of it. MOM was going under, the babies were trapped, i heard them peeping one day and just in time set them free, they couldn't figure how to go down and then under to get out.

Looks like a Carolina Wren family. They WILL nest in hanging baskets wherever then can. I assume they were ready to fledge --so they are probably all okay. You got some cute pictures. Aren't they just sweet???

They are SO cute*! I have a feeling that are nesting somewhere else in your yard. If you watch closely, you will probably see mom and dad hanging around and keeping an eye on the babies and still feeding them, but I doubt they will return to the nest. I'm glad you got the pics when you did*

These little Wrens are so cute. Some raised in one of my planters a couple of years ago.

I had a similar thing happen with a hanging plant. I thought the birds were gone and when I put the hose in the baby birds all jumped out.
Those little wrens are just so cute, I bet the parents rounded them up somewhere drier :)

How cute!! They must've been ready to leave the nest.

We once spent hours rounding up the babies from a hanging basket that I moved to a safer spot. And for every baby that we put back, another 2 would jump out. Mom and Dad were frantic, so we finally just left the poor little things alone.

It is hard, we feel so responsible, but apparently after a few days, they will learn to fly.

Oh how wonderful, a wren family in your ivy basket. So your garden grows flowers and birds! Do you keep your camera with you while watering? I tell you, since I started blogging I am hardly ever without my camera. Good thing you captured the pictures of them to show us, thanks!

Susie, what a delightful little guy. He looks like a teenager with his feathers all sticking out. And has the 'attitude look' of a teen. :)

You probably did Mom and Dad wren a favor by getting them out of the nest. They look more than ready to be out and on their own.

How sweet! Mom and Dad probably decided it was time to find a safer place for the kids than a charcoal grill:)

Catching up today...looks like you had a great weekend in Memphis. That's a place I've always wanted to visit. And thanks for letting us know that the rescue kitten is doing well; I was worried about her.

I would have jumped out of my pants when the babies came out!
They can be noisy when they aren't happy. Sounds like you did a good job of trying to help out, since they didn't go back to the nest, maybe you were just the help mom and dad needed.

What a surprise, but what great pictures you got as a result. We had some birds in one of our hanging baskets, but we've never seen any little ones. I guess they decided there was too much traffic in that location.

Susie, hi. Aren't they simply delightful... our feathered friends and partners in our gardens? They do give us joy and offer much laughter.

And such a handsome photo of you, hubby and family. Thanks for sharing those with us. Di

I wonder how mom and dad moved them? Or do you suppose they fledged? I used to have a big problem with house wrens nesting in the eves on the back porch. They made an awful mess and were so gross with their droppings, just not caring where they did it! I closed up all the gaps and openings and now they nest elsewhere, thank goodness!
