If You Get It They Will Come

Don't you just love it when you get something new and it actually works!?!?! With all the finches we've been having I went out and got a new hanger and thistle feeder. It hadn't been up more than 5 minutes and I looked out and caught the first visitor. Then a few more decide to check it out. Then they were basically fighting over it! The bad thing about the feeder is it only has two perches. The little guy on the top decided to just wait out his turn. Doesn't he have good manners?! What amazes me is how do these little guys know that this seed is only for them?!?! And, none of the other birds even go near it. I'm sure you that feed the bird have observed this as well.

Well whatever the reason we've enjoyed watching them feed.

Neat Susie.... Buy one of those mesh bags --full of thistle and hang it on the top with a clothes pen or something... They'll eat there also....

I love our finches and we have alot of them too.
Hugs,
Betsy

That was sure fast! I know our thistle feeder mostly sits and waits for visitors like goldfinches or Pine siskins. I guess the one decided it was better to wait than fight for the food :)

We hang the thistle socks and they work great too. It is amazing how they knoe the seed is there, what? do they smell it or something??

Neat! I saw a small feeder like this at Fred's! Fred's stays out of loose thistle seed half of the time. People buy it about as fast as the Goldfinches suck it out of the feeders!! Happy Monday!

Love it! I didn't have many yellow finches this winter, but the chickadees sure enjoyed the thistle!

I hope you enjoy watching the finches at your new feeder. We have several now, and they are all busy at times.

I have always wondered how they come around so fast too. Makes you think they are just sitting up in the trees and watching you, waiting for you to put up a feeder for them. HA! They are pretty little birds, Susie. I bet you'll have fun watching them.

My Susie, how wonderful. They know who to visit! We don't have a finch feeder up and likely won't have one anymore due to the thistle... can't control it in the garden and more than enough is around so the finches are here anyway. Hope you are having a great start to a beautiful week. Diana

Yes, we love when a plan comes together.

They will be at it all day long...trust me.
and I agree with the others...the thistle socks are great. Twelve birds can eat at one of those at a time.
Enjoy!!

Susie, this is so funny. We just got a new feeder last weekend andthe goldfinches were at it in hours! We got one of those long mesh cylinders they can cling to (for sunflower seeds). It does have a couple of perches, but they don't use them much.

I've only ever seen two goldfinches here before putting up my feeder. Now I must have seen 50! They are so cute and sociable!

Happy birdwatching!

Susie, oh happy day! I can hear a 'I'm getting hooked on this bird feeding and watching'in this post. :) It is addictive, but so much fun. Next thing you know there will be feeders for different birds and then a new camera to take photos from far away. I am happy that you have found out how rewarding birding can be.

So neat how they instinctively know it's there, and they weren't shy about coming to eat. If you feed them, they will come. ;-)

Aren't they beautiful? Sometimes when I see them my first thought is someone's pet parakeet or canary got out. Isn't it amazing they find the seed feeders so quickly. How do they do it? But aren't you glad they do? Happy birding Susie.

To be so cute, they sure are little piggies, aren't they? :)

Lemme see, if I were a bird, say a nice big bird like a Stellar Jay, which bird in the neighborhood would I avoid at almost all cost? A pinesiskin and those crazed finches, that's who! Have a great day Susie!

Oh by the way, they do smell it, and so when you wash it make sure that you don't use a strong smelling detergent, it could throw your birdies off. And make sure that your thistle is sterile, most of the thistle sold is because it is a noxious weed, but check just the same.

It has always amazed me how quickly the birds arrive when a new feeder is hung. Love the American Goldfinch visits, they brighten the day.

I love watching the birds feed..I moved my bird feeder infront of my office window...a little sparrow is eating now...and the doves have been coming in like crazy...if only those stinkin cardinals would come eat....probably will to day since I had to loan my camera out for the day....

hayhay, I tried to post yesterday, but for some reason , lost in space!

anyway, itsn't it odd how certain birds like certain feeders?
LOL,

I leave a bit of catfood out on the front porch, and the Cardinals , only the Cardinals come up and help finish it off. Dry food that is.

seeya,

the best is yet to come!!!

Looks like Spring is near to me!!

Any races in your near future?

Finches are so much fun to watch. I love how they feed upside down. I accidentally broke out the bottom of mine last fall trying to clean it out, so I think it's time to go shopping again. Right now I'm enjoying seeing all the robins again--a sure sign that spring has finally arrived!

we have had so many goldfinches this winter and have had a hard time keeping up with the demand.
we got a feeder with several socks and it has been helpful to have it...so many can feed at the same time.
so glad yours was found so quickly by these little guys.
happy springtime.

I use the mesh bags to attract them sometime too but I have about given up feeding birds, they come and then I am feeding my neighbors viscous cats.
